Does the word counter count hyphenated words as one?

Yes. "Well-known" counts as one word, the same way most word processors count it.

How is reading time worked out?

It assumes an average adult reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and about 140 words per minute for speaking aloud.

Only in this browser tab, so a refresh does not lose your work. It is never uploaded and disappears when you close the tab.
